My Writing

Lyrics & Librettos

Deeply influenced by my time at music school, I consider my greatest writing to be what I’ve created with music in mind. The connections I’ve made with both composers and performers have been indispensable to my process and are a constant source of inspiration. By far, my favorite way to end an introduction is with “… and I also wrote a musical!”

Crazy People Like Us

Completed in 2014, Crazy People Like Us is my first major work and first step into musical theatre. The two-hour epic follows the lives of five students as they grapple with their personal and communal identities at a prestigious music conservatory.

POSTMORTEM

Postmortem is the working title of my current project and second musical theatre endeavor. Taking a huge step away from CPLU, this musical focuses on the approachably-average Matt as he falls victim to a shooting and watches his life flash before his eyes–The only problem is when he doesn’t like what he sees.

The Interior Life of the Writer

Taking a break from the behemoth that is writing my next major work (Postmortem), I am nearing completion on a brief, three-song work about writer’s block.

Huh, wonder where I got that idea.

Miscellaneous Lyrics & Poetry

A battered composition notebook with a duct-tape spine, stuffed with colored paper sticking out.

In addition to writing musicals, I also write stand alone pieces specifically intended to be lyrics and a bit of poetry.

Poetry and I go way back, most specifically to one infamously battered composition notebook that I filled with literally hundreds of poems between the ages of ten and thirteen. I most certainly have to blame some extraordinary english language arts teachers for the habit, which has stuck with me through the years. While I like to think that I’ve progressed since the contents of that one notebook, today I mostly use poetry as a personal exercise, off limits from professional use unless I have some sort of unexpected breakthrough.

When it comes to lyrics writing, I still lean heavily toward musical theatre as a genre and enjoy comedic pieces the most, but my extensive choral experience contributes to my work as well. While I have a few collaborations in motion, I have not yet had one of my stand alones set— but you could change that!

About the Author

Sure, I work in a cubicle and write musicals, but what’s my favorite color?

My Current Project

Postmortem is my second full-length musical, and notably darker than the last. Our protagonist dies at the beginning but his story is far from over.
